What’s My Title? The Debate Over What I Do

Let me share a behind-the-scenes insight. Over the years, I’ve had countless conversations about what to call myself. If you ask my mid-market business clients across Auckland and New Zealand, you’ll get different answers. Some call me a Business Advisor, others a Business Coach, a Business Consultant, or even a Business Growth Expert. The truth? I don’t fit neatly into just one of these titles—yet each captures an important part of my work.

A Business Advisor?

A Business Advisor offers strategic guidance, helping CEOs and leadership teams shape decisions and long-term direction. That certainly applies to my work at SSBG—strategy is at the heart of everything I do.

But “advisor” alone feels too passive, as if I simply offer recommendations and step back. That’s not my approach. With 30 years of experience across 30+ industries, I know what works and what doesn’t. I don’t just provide insights— I work alongside business leaders throughout New Zealand and beyond to ensure they have the tools, structure, and discipline to turn strategy into execution.

A Business Coach?

A Business Coach typically focuses on leadership development, performance, and accountability. There’s no doubt that coaching plays a key role in my work. I help New Zealand business leaders build their own capability, lead high-performance teams, and develop the mindset needed for sustained success.

But coaching alone isn’t enough. Unlocking potential is one thing—ensuring it translates into measurable business results is another. Without the right frameworks, execution discipline, and market strategy, potential remains just that—unrealised.

A Business Consultant?

A Business Consultant is typically an expert who diagnoses problems and delivers solutions—sometimes even implementing them. This fits because I bring global best practices to mid-market businesses in New Zealand, leveraging proven methodologies like the 7 Attributes of Agile Growth and Outthinker to drive results.

But consulting often implies short-term projects or isolated problem-solving. That’s not how I work. Business growth isn’t a one-off fix—it’s a structured, ongoing journey.

A Business Growth Expert?

This title comes the closest. At SSBG, growth is at the core of everything we do. But not just any growth—sustainable, scalable, well-managed growth.

I typically work with business leaders in New Zealand facing three key challenges:

  • Stagnation – They’ve hit a plateau and need a breakthrough strategy.
  • Uncontrolled Growth – They’re scaling too fast and struggling to manage the chaos.
  • Long-Term Sustainability – They’re successful but need the right structure to maintain momentum.

With a track record of working alongside 300+ companies, I’ve seen firsthand what it takes to transition from being a business operator to a business champion. Being a Business Growth Expert means understanding the science of growth—what works, what doesn’t, and why.

So, what’s my title?

You decide.
